If you are considering a tummy tuck, it’s only natural that you have questions. You might be wondering what the procedure entails, what risks are involved, and if you’ll be happy with the end result. While each person’s experience with tummy tuck surgery is unique, most appreciate the outcome. This type of surgery is also called an abdominoplasty and is generally the last option after diet and exercise fail to produce a flat belly. Before choosing to undergo this procedure, it can help to learn a bit more about what to expect. Top plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Berlet wants you to understand a few very important facts about tummy tucks. Review the tummy tuck facts below before your initial consultation so you can have the best conversation possible with your doctor. With a baseline understanding of the procedure, you’ll feel more confident in your decision.

What is a tummy tuck?

First off, a tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure where a plastic surgeon removes excess fat and skin from the waistline. This procedure can also strengthen some of the weakened muscles in the abdominal area. This creates a smoother and more firm abdomen for the patient.

Fact #1: There are different types of tummy tucks.

There are three different types of tummy tuck surgery. Whichever kind is right for you will be determined by your doctor. He or she can make a medical recommendation that will ensure your safety as well as achieve your body goal. The three types of tummy tucks are as follows.

  1. A mini tummy tuck involves tightening the loose skin in the lower abdomen.
  2. A standard tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens the underlying muscle underneath.
  3. An extended tummy tuck targets the entire lower torso that includes a complete abdominoplasty and lateral thigh lift.

As we mentioned, a plastic surgeon can help you choose which option is best for your body and future goals. Note, however, that a mini tummy tuck can be effective and less invasive than the other options above.

Fact #2: A tummy tuck is not a “fix-all” weight loss plan.

Having a tummy tuck is a big decision. As a result, we want people to understand that it’s not a free pass to keeping their weight down. While a tummy tuck is essentially permanent, you should still have a good weight management plan in place. This ensures the longevity of your results and helps you not just to continue looking good, but feeling good, as well. Your weight management plan should include healthy eating and some form of regular exercise. When you combine these healthy lifestyle changes with a tummy tuck, it’s a recipe for long-term weight management.

Fact #3: Patients need time for recovery.

Some plastic surgery procedures are done on an outpatient basis and have quick healing times. However, a tummy tuck is not one of these procedures. Generally speaking, the procedure is done in a hospital setting and requires pain medication. Initial recovery time is anywhere from one to three weeks, and you will need assistance in that first week. No heavy lifting or strenuous activities will be allowed until you are cleared by a doctor.

How long does recovery take overall?

After the procedure, the surgeon covers the incision in surgical dressing. He or she will also provide the patient with a compression garment or “belly binder.” Within one day, the patient should be walking (with assistance) to prevent the formation of blood clots. The patient will likely be taking prescription pain relievers and antibiotics to help ease any discomfort and reduce the risk of infection. Additionally, surgical drains may be in place for up to two weeks.

It takes six weeks for the initial recovery phase of a tummy tuck to pass. After these six weeks, your incision should be healed and you should no longer be experiencing any pain or difficulty. Any swelling that occurred will subside at this point, as well.  Several follow-up appointments with your doctor are required to check on how the incision is healing. During this time, the patient should avoid any position that involves abdominal extension or bending backward. This may pull or place too much tension on the incision. The patient should also hold off on any strenuous physical activity or exercise until the doctor gives his or her approval.

Fact #4: Tummy tucks aren’t just for women.

Although tummy tucks are often associated with women, men can benefit from this procedure, too. Typically, women seek this procedure due to the occurrence of loose, excess skin following childbearing. However, for men who have lost a lot of weight and have loose skin, for instance, a tummy tuck can be highly beneficial. Men also suffer from loose muscles and sagging skin, even with diet and exercise. Once again, speaking with your doctor will help you make an informed decision.
