Getting a mammogram becomes a regular part of everyday life for women after the age of 40. Early detection is crucial for stopping breast cancer and getting the right treatment. As a result, considering the process of getting a mammogram with implants is important. Whether you have had breast implants for years or are considering breast augmentation in the future, it is important to understand how this process works with breast implants.

The good news is that having breast implants will not stop you from having regular screenings. Women with implants can rest assured that having a mammogram with implants is very doable and common. There are, however, some details that you should note when you go for your screenings. Let your doctor know that you have implants and use the following information to inform the process of choosing your mammogram doctor and having your screening.

What can I expect before, during and after my mammogram with implants?

There are a few things that you can do to prepare for your mammogram. First and foremost, make sure that you have a doctor and a facility that provides mammograms for women with implants.

Here are a few other things to note about your screening.

  • Mammograms conducted on women with breast implants require extra imaging. This is because regular X-rays used in mammograms do not go through saline or silicone implants to show the tissue behind or under them.
  • Breast implants may make it more difficult to see certain parts of your breast. As a result, confirm that your tech and radiologist are experienced in reading mammograms of women with breast implants.
  • Before your mammogram, if you have silicone implants, you should be sure that the implants are not ruptured. To check for ruptures, an MRI is recommended three years after the initial procedure. You should continue to have screenings every two years after that.
  • Please remember that if you have breast implants, this does not reduce your need to get annual breast cancer screening exams. In addition, breast implants do not reduce your chances of getting breast cancer.

Is a mammogram with implants different than the usual procedure?

The short answer? Yes. Getting a mammogram with breast implants is a bit different from the regular mammogram screening. Because your implants are inserted over the natural breast tissue, x-rays cannot be used to capture the necessary images. Instead, the radiologist and techs rely on implant displacement views to see the tissue behind and around it.

Implant displacement views consist of eight breast pictures. This is different than the usual four pictures that are required. While the implant is pushed back against the chest wall, the breast tissue is brought forward. This is when the images are taken. This may feel uncomfortable for women with breast implants. According to previous patients, it feels like intense pressure. It may be very uncomfortable for women who have a lot of scar tissue. However, it is the best way to capture clear images of the breast and give your doctor a clear image of your breast tissue.

Key tips for getting a mammogram with breast implants

The three most important pieces of advice to note when getting a mammogram if you have implants are:

  • Find the right doctor and the right facility. Before you schedule your mammogram, make sure you have a doctor who has performed screenings to women with implants in the past. If you’re not sure how to find the right doctor, ask your primary physician to recommend someone who can accommodate your needs. Once you reach out to the practice, ask about the clinic staff’s experience. Before you make your appointment, you should know that the clinic obtains special mammogram images as well as the standard mammogram images to better evaluate the breast tissue.
  • Tell your doctor. Even after you have discussed your implants and made your appointment, make sure to bring it up to your doctor again. Tell the staff that you have breast implants so that they can ensure everything is in place to get the most accurate images possible.
  • Note any changes or concerns. If you have noticed any changes or anything unusual in regards to your breasts, make sure to tell your doctor. He or she will then discuss with the radiologist if any other imaging is necessary to get an accurate read.
