fotolia_1375083Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the United States. Based in Bergen County, New Jersey, Dr. Berlet’s breast augmentation solutions can give women an opportunity to refill deflated breasts after pregnancy or an opportunity to make uneven breasts more proportional and lastly enlarge otherwise small breasts. With our doctor’s aesthetic eye, patient’s will enjoy great looking, natural feeling breasts that are one or more cup sizes larger after the surgery.

Every woman has unique desires for both her breasts and body shape. Understanding that, we spend careful time analyzing, measuring the patient during the preoperative consultation to learn what the patient hopes to gain and decide what implant would be best suited for that patient. In this way, the patient will be optimized for their specific body type and what they may have in mind.

There are many types of implants available for each patient. The main question typically is whether to consider saline or silicone. Silicone became controversial in the 1990s and was temporarily taken off the market. After 20 years of studying the patients both retrospectively and prospectively, the silicone implants are once again available on the market due to them being found safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Typically, the silicone implants offer a much softer, more natural feel than saline implants. Technique and placement of course play a huge role in the outcome which is carefully discussed with each patient.

There are four (4) procedures that are discussed for implant placement. These include in the armpit, in the crease on the underside of the breast, around the areola, and lastly through the umbilicus. Typically, we recommend under the breast as an ideal technique to create a dual plane where the implant is under the muscle on the upper pole of the breast and behind the breast tissue at the lower pole of the breast. This gives the implant an opportunity to fully expand the breast to give a natural appearing breast with a natural slope above and a nice round fullness below.

Typically, the surgery takes approximately one hour to perform. Postoperatively, patients are typically comfortable as Marcaine, a long-acting anesthetic, is placed into the breast pocket to alleviate the initial discomfort of the implant placement. Patients rarely require much more than a day or two of pain medication, and depending on their vocation, they can return to work as soon as three days. Drains are typically not placed. The incisions are closed with stitches that are under the skin that melt so there is no need to remove sutures. The patient may or may not be required to wear a postoperative bra to help the implants fall into place. This descent can take up to three months depending on whether the patient has had children or not.

Complications following breast augmentation are uncommon and usually minimal. The biggest concern is capsular contracture, swelling, pain, infection, and a change in nipple sensation. Any of these may require additional surgery; however, once again, this is uncommon. Regular monitoring of breast implants after breast augmentation is recommended to ensure continuing breast and implant health.
