About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that utilizes breast implants to elevate the size, fullness, and shape of your breasts to improve their aesthetic appearance.
Available Implants
At Berlet Plastic Surgery, Dr. Berlet offers Motiva® brand breast implants. Motiva® is one of the leading breast implant manufacturers globally, and they offer advanced silicone-shell implants that encapsulate a cohesive, natural-feeling silicone gel. Each of these implants offers unique benefits and seamless results.
- Motiva Ergonomix2®: The Ergonomix2 breast implants utilize several technologies developed by Motiva to create more realistic-looking and feeling results. They feature ProgressiveGel® Ultima® technology, which allows the implant to replicate the movements of your organic breast tissue while maintaining its shape and fullness. (3)
- Motiva Ergonomix®: Motiva Ergonomix implants can adapt and move with your body as it changes positions. These anatomically-shaped implants mimic the movements, feeling, and appearance of natural breast tissue, allowing you to achieve your enhancements without overtly appearing “worked on.” (4)
- Motiva Round®: Motiva Round implants are round implants that can add significant projection to the upper pole of your breast. (5) These implants can create a perkier appearance to the breasts and accentuate your cleavage—regardless of whether you are standing, sitting, or lying down.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for a breast augmentation if you are interested in refining the shape, size, fullness, and symmetry of your breasts. You may also benefit from this procedure if you underwent a mastectomy or sustained trauma and wish to restore the natural contours of your chest.
To qualify, you should be in good general health and hold realistic expectations regarding your results. You should not have any known sensitivities or allergies to silicone. It is also important that you are nonsmoking or willing to quit for an extended period of time. Dr. Berlet will assess your candidacy during your personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
During your personal consultation, Dr. Berlet will discuss each aspect of your treatment. He will ask you about your medical history, personal concerns, and desired results. He will also perform a physical evaluation.
Dr. Berlet will use this information to craft your personalized treatment plan. He will help you select the most suitable type of implants, determine their placement, and decide which incision pattern is best.

Preparation
After scheduling your breast augmentation, you will need to prepare. To help you, Dr. Berlet will provide a set of detailed pre-operative instructions, which may include:
- Ceasing Certain Medications: Unless medically necessary, avoid taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning or antiplatelet medications.
- Requesting Time Away: Prepare to take time away from your professional and personal responsibilities to give your body time to heal.
- Preparing Transportation: Have a trusted friend or family member transport you home, as you will not be able to drive yourself.
- Abstaining From Substances: Cease any alcohol or nicotine consumption in the weeks before and after your breast augmentation.
Procedure
Dr. Berlet performs each breast augmentation on an outpatient basis at his surgical center. When you arrive, he will reconfirm your desired enhancements before cleansing your skin. You will then receive general anesthesia. Once it takes effect, Dr. Berlet will place an incision using one of two approaches: the inframammary incision pattern and/or the transaxillary incision pattern.
- The Inframammary Incision: This incision extends horizontally beneath the breast crease and conceals scarring within the natural contours of your chest.
- The Transaxillary Incision: This incision hides in the crease of the armpit and avoids creating any external scars on the breasts themselves. (6)
Once Dr. Berlet creates the incision, he will create a pocket for your breast implant to rest in. He can make it in one or two placements: above or below the pectoralis muscle.
- Above the Muscle Placement: Surgeons also refer to this placement as the subglandular placement, and it may offer benefits such as a shorter reduction time.
- Below the Muscle Placement: Surgeons also refer to this placement as the submuscular placement. This approach may better conceal the appearance of breast implants, especially in thinner patients.
Dr. Berlet will then place the implants within your chest, secure them in position, and then meticulously suture each incision.
Motiva MinimalScar®
Dr. Berlet can perform the Motiva MinimalScar® procedure when placing silicone Ergonomix® breast implants. This is a specialized variation of the breast augmentation procedure that uses smaller incisions than the industry standard. (7)
Dr. Berlet will begin this procedure by placing a small incision beneath the breast that extends across the inframammary fold. These incisions will be about 2.5 cm, which is approximately half the size of those typically used for a breast augmentation procedure. He will then create a pocket either above or below the pectoralis muscle using the MotivaImagine® Ultralight LED Retractor. These retractors are narrower than a typical set of retractors and feature a built-in light to increase visibility.
Dr. Berlet will then insert the breast implants using the MotivaImagine® Insertion Sleeve to place the breast implants through the smaller incision. He will then secure the implants before closing each incision. (7)
Recovery
After a breast augmentation, you can expect to experience some swelling, bruising, or tightness around your chest. These effects will subside on their own, but you may also manage them through prescribed medications and plenty of rest. Dr. Berlet will also have you wear the HuggerARIA compression bra, which will prevent further swelling and maintain the new sculpt of your chest.
You may return to most of your daily activities after approximately one to two weeks. However, you will need to refrain from anything physically demanding or arduous for another several weeks, or until Dr. Berlet clears you to return.
Dr. Berlet will provide you with a set of detailed post-operative instructions to guide you through each stage of your recovery.
Results
You may notice immediate changes in your figure after your breast augmentation, but your results will become more visible as you continue to recover. Your breasts will appear fuller, larger, and more curvaceous, promoting a more defined and alluring silhouette overall. These effects may also lead to improvements in your sense of self-esteem and body positivity.
The results of your breast augmentation are long-lasting, with effects that you can enjoy for up to one decade. However, your breast implants will not last a lifetime, and you must eventually replace them. Dr. Berlet advises checking them regularly to ensure that they are structurally sound and that no ruptures or leaks have occurred.
