Lip lift surgery is quickly becoming one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. Many women are looking to have more plump lips and this procedure can help them achieve that goal. The most important aspect of lip enhancement procedures is to achieve a natural appearance. Your plastic surgeon will take the following factors into account when planning the procedure with a results-oriented mindset.

  • Size
  • Shape
  • Symmetry
  • Proportion
  • Balance

While considering these five factors, your plastic surgeon will outline realistic goals for your procedure. This will help you to make the best medical decision possible for you.

What is lip lift surgery?

Lip lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that shortens the distance between the bottom of the nose and the top lip. This space tends to lengthen with age, as our skin loses collagen. It can change our appearance, making us look a little “long” in the face. A lip lift can create a more youthful appearance.

Procedure Steps for Lip Lift surgery

The procedure for lip lift surgery begins with the plastic surgeon making marks on the patient’s upper lip to indicate the target treatment area. Then, the surgeon injects numbing medicine into the area. Once it is numb, the surgeon will make an incision just below the patient’s nose. The surgeon then gently removes the necessary portion of the skin above the lip. Any light bleeding that occurs is controlled. The surgeon then closes the incision with many small sutures. This will ensure that any resulting scars are minimal and barely visible.

Following the procedure, the patient should keep the treatment area covered in an antibiotic ointment. The doctor will remove the sutures several days after the procedure.

What to expect from recovery

Immediately following the procedure, the upper lip will be sore and swollen to varying degrees. Recovery from lip lift surgery takes several weeks. There is usually some swelling in the days following the procedure. This is a normal part of healing. It is important that the patient keeps the incision clean and covered with antibacterial ointment for the first week to ten days. Patients should expect to limit their activity for at least a week, and physical exercise should be avoided for approximately two weeks.

The initial healing period is generally two to three weeks, depending on the patient. The results of the procedure will become more noticeable after all the swelling subsides. This may take up to two months. Additionally, the scar will take several months to a full year to heal, improving over time.
