With summer in full swing, shorts and bathing suit seasons have arrived. This leaves a lot of women wondering how to treat cellulite and flaunt their fabulous legs. No need to worry, though! There are several ways to successfully treat cellulite. If you are one of many looking for a solution, it’s normal to feel frustrated and embarrassed. Because cellulite is trapped in the dermal layer of skin, diet and exercise are not effective. Fortunately, there are things you can do to improve your appearance. Let’s look at a few of them.

First, what causes cellulite?

Cellulite is a common condition that affects nearly 90% of women at some point in their lives. The condition can be described as looking like “cottage cheese” coming through the skin. In reality, what people see are actually fat deposits beneath the skin. It’s a common misconception that cellulite only occurs in full-figured women. It affects women of all shapes and sizes and can be very difficult to treat.

The cause of cellulite is unknown. However, it may simply be caused by the way the connective tissue and the layer of fat just below it interact. In women, the fat cells and connective tissue in this layer are arranged vertically. If the fat cells protrude into the layer of skin, this gives the appearance of cellulite. Conversely, in men, the tissue has a criss-cross structure, which may explain why men are less likely to experience it.

Other causes might include the following.

  • Age
  • Hormonal factors
  • Genetics
  • Dietary & lifestyle factors

Noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment methods

#1: Topical Creams

Talk to your doctor about prescribing a topical cream that contains retinol or caffeine. Many of these creams are sold over the counter, but we always recommend doctor approval first. The thought is that these ingredients will increase blood flow to the affected areas. While cellulite creams are non-invasive, they generally offer little improvement. They can, however, be used for short-term results.

#2: Foam Rollers

Rolling therapy is intended to reduce swelling and inflammation in the affected tissues. By using a foam roller, you can tighten muscles and plump up the dermis – but the effects only last a few days. Foam rolling doesn’t do anything to help the fibrous bands underneath the skin, so they will return in a few days. Again, we recommend this for a short-term improvement only.

#4: Radiofrequency Devices

Radiofrequency is an option that can actually produce long-term results. This procedure involves tightening the fibrous bands that lead to cellulite. If the bands are tight against the skin, they are no longer bulging. This improves the appearance dramatically. Results can last for three to six months. As a result, maintenance over time is required. Ask Berlet Plastic Surgery about Venus Freeze, a type of radiofrequency device that aids in skin tightening and cellulite reduction.

Other Options for Cellulite Treatment

#1: Laser Therapy

Laser therapy uses beams of laser light under the skin to melt away the fat. The laser then cuts through the connective tissue to remove deep dimples and depressions. The good news is that laser therapy shows immediate results. The bad news is that it requires yearly touch-ups and can leave behind bruising.

#2: Liposuction

For the most permanent results, liposuction is best. Though it’s the most invasive treatment, it’s the most effective. Not everyone is a good candidate for fat grafting, however. Talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine if this is the right option for you.
